José María Aznar, former Spanish PM, visits Georgia

Invited by Mikhail Saakashvili, president of Georgia, José María Aznar, the former Spanish prime minister, arrived in Tbilisi on November 23rd and was greeted by Zurab Pololikashvili, Georgian Minister of Economic Development. Mr. Aznar will be paying a two-day visit to Georgia.

Aznar will be visiting the Tserovani settlement (where thousands of IDPs from the Shida Kartli Region reside) together with Pololikashvili and Lasha Gotsiridze, deputy minister of Regional Development and Infrastructure.

Furthermore, Aznar will be awarded the degree of Doctor Honoris Causa by the Ilia Chavchavadze University (Tbilisi) where he will participate in the "20 years after the fall of the Wall; a perspective of Georgia and the region" along with the president Saakashvili and Ana Palacio, ex Minister of Foreign Affairs of Spain.

José María Aznar was Prime minister of Spain from May 1996 till 17 April 2004. Since he left office, he has been member of the Spanish Council of State (now resigned), he was appointed Distinguished Scholar in the Practice of Global Leadership at Georgetown University in Washington, DC, where he gives lectures on Political Leadership and Contemporary European Politics and Trans-Atlantic Relationships, he was a member of the advisory board of London based Centaurus Capital, and he is a currently member of the Board of Directors of News Corporation, the media conglomerate of Rupert Murdoch, member of the European Advisory Panel of The European Business Awards and the European Council on Tolerance and Reconciliation, member of the Club of Madrid, the Global Leadership Foundation (which works to promote good governance), and President of the FAES Foundation for Social Studies and Analysis, an institution dedicated to serving Spain and the concept of individual freedom. Mr. Aznar is also advisor of Doheny Global Group, based in the US and with interests in the real estate and energy sectors; Eastern Europe (including Georgia) being an estrategic expansion area for this group.
